MLB hands suspensions to Guillen and Gibbons
MLB announced today that they will be suspending Jose Guillen and Jay Gibbons for the first 15 days of the 2008 season. The reason for the suspension was due to both players violating the leagues drug policy.
Guillen, Gibbons, Gary Matthews Jr., Rick Ankiel, Troy Glaus and Scott Schoeneweis were all reported to have purchased human growth hormone (HGH) at various times. However, MLB was only able to punish Guillen and Gibbons due to the lack of evidence on the other players.
While Guillen will appeal the ruling, Gibbons has accepted his fate and had this to say: “I am deeply sorry for the mistakes that I have made. I have no excuses and bare sole responsibility for my decisions. Years ago, I relied on the advice of a doctor, filled a prescription, charged the HGH, which is a medication, to my credit card and had only intended to help speed my recovery from my injuries and surgeries.”
It is safe to say that this wont be the end of MLB cracking down on steroid use. With more players going public and naming names it will be interesting how big this gets and what the league will do about it.
