MLB: Former top prospect Josh Hamilton traded to Texas Rangers

December 22nd, 2007 khawe Posted in Cincinnati Reds, Texas Rangers 3 Comments »

Cincinnati Red outfielder Josh Hamilton, who had one of the best comeback stories in recent years, was traded to the Texas Rangers today. Hamilton, who battled with a drug and alcohol addiction,  fought off his demons and returned to baseball in 2006 as a centerfielder for the Reds. Hamilton was out of baseball from 2003-2006 and has been clean for more than two years. During his rookie season Hamilton batted .292, hit 19 homers and 47 RBI’s in 298 at-bats - Hamilton’s season was cut short due to a couple of minor ailments.

In order to fill a big offense need the Rangers parted with two pitchers - Edinson Volquez and Danny Herrera.  Volquez is one of the Rangers top pitching prospects and was the key part of the deal for the Reds. The Reds have plenty of outfielders, including: Ken Griffey Jr., Adam Dunn, Norris Hooper and Ryan Freel,  and were in serious need of some young, solid, pitchers.

The Rangers are also close to getting free agent reliever Eddie Guardado - who is coming off of reconstructive elbow surgery.
