NBA: Rockets keep winning, streak hits franchise best 17 games

March 7th, 2008 khawe Posted in Dallas Mavericks, Houston Rockets, NBA No Comments »

The Houston Rockets just cant be stopped, with or without Yao Ming in the lineup. Last night the Rockets beat the Dallas Mavericks 113-98 for their 17th win in a row - their 5th win without all-world center Yao Ming.

Tracy McGrady continues to show how invaluable he is to the team, last night he put in 31 points and 9 assists. But more importantly McGrady bring a level of confidence to the team. “We all believe, man,” McGrady said after the game. “When you’ve got a roster full of guys that really believe in themselves, great chemistry among the team, and we go out and play extremely hard every night, I’m not surprised.”

The Mavericks were led by Josh Howard who put in 21 points and Jason Terry who had 17. The Mavericks were also without forward Dirk Nowitzki who was serving a suspension for his hard foul on Utah Jazz forward Andrei Kirilenko. However, even without Dirk in the lineup, Mavericks guard Jason Terry gave all the credit to the Rockets. “They just outworked us — to a man, every position. That’s something we can’t allow to happen. They’re playing well together right now, but at the same time there’s not a team we can’t beat.”

The thing about this streak is that the Rockets are not playing weak teams, last night they beat a good Mavericks team in Dallas. So the question is how does this streak translate into wins in the NBA playoffs.  The thing is…it doesn’t. Playoff basketball is at another level. I can see the Rockets beating someone in the first round but can they really play and win multiple games against a team like the Lakers or Suns? With Yao they have a shot, without Yao they will make it competitive but the lack of big man in the center will end up costing them.

NBA: No Yao, No Problem. Rockets win 14th straight

March 1st, 2008 khawe Posted in Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Lakers, NBA No Comments »

The Houston Rockets kept up their winning ways even without their star center Yao Ming. Last night the Rockets beat the Memphis Grizzlies 116-95 for their 14th straight win - the longest of any NBA team this season. The Rockets are 1 win shy of the franchise record set in their championship season of 1993-94.

Tracy McGrady, who led the Rockets with 25 points and 6 assists, tried to keep the winning streak in perspective. “It’s great. It was a short term goal of ours and we accomplished that. But despite our sweeping February, we still can’t be overconfident. We’ve got an offensive team coming in here Sunday and we’ve got to keep it going.” Despite the winning streak the Rockets remain in 7th place in the Western Conference.

With Yao out for the season with a stress fracture in his left foot the Rockets called on (again) 41-year old center Dikembe Mutombo. Mutombo grabbed 13 rebounds and had 4 blocks against the Grizzlies, in his limited roll Mutombo has provided a much needed defensive presence down low.

The Rockets road gets rougher as they place the New Orleans Hornets twice and both San Antonio Spurs and the Los Angeles Lakers in March.

Welcome to the Houston Rockets Gerald…it wasn’t as good as you blowing out a candle in the 2008 NBA Slam Dunk Contest, but it was still nice.

NBA: Rockets Yao Ming done for the season

February 26th, 2008 khawe Posted in Houston Rockets, NBA No Comments »

Heartbreaking news for the NBA Houston Rockets as the Houston Chronicle just reported that center Yao Ming has a stress factor in his left foot and will most likely have season ending surgery today. The official announcement is scheduled for later today. The Rockets are currently on a 12 game winning streak and 4th in the the Southwest Division - they will now need to lean very heavily on Tracy McGrady for offense.

Yao, who is 7 foot 6, has averaged 22.0 points and 10.8 rebounds per game this season.

NBA: Houston Rockets win 10th straight

February 22nd, 2008 khawe Posted in Houston Rockets, Miami Heat, NBA No Comments »

The Houston Rockets are playing some of the best basketball in the NBA right now. Last night the Rockets beat the Miami Heat 112-100 for their 10th straight victory and their 14th win in 15 games.

The Rockets were led by Tracy McGrady who scored 23 points and 10 assisits, and Yao Ming who put in 21. The Rockets played without a few familair faces as they made a couple deals before the NBA deadline yesterday. The Rockets sent Mike James and Bonzi Wells to the New Orleans Hornets for Bob Jackson and Adam Haluska. The Rockets also traded Kirk Snyder to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Gerald Green.  “We lost a couple of guys that were well-liked around here, well liked in the locker room,” Rafer Alston said. “That’s the business side of basketball, but you’ve got to go out there and play.”

The Miami Heat, who have the NBA’s worst record, were led by Dwyane Wade who put in a game-high 33 points and Shawn Marion who scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Last night was Marion’s 4th game as a Heat since being dealt for Shaquille O’Neal. All night long the Heat showed why they are the worst team in the NBA as they played hoorible defense and at times looking completly uninsipred. Coach Pat Riley was watching a different game I think. “We got off to a real bad start,” Riley said. “They were really hyped up and really prepared to play. We made a good run but we were constantly climbing up a hill all game.”

NBA: Chinese Basketball Super Bowl results in disappointing results

February 3rd, 2008 khawe Posted in Houston Rockets, Milwaukee Bucks, NBA 3 Comments »

The two biggest NBA basketball stars in China played last night, but unfortunately they were both unimpressive for the 200 million+ fans watching worldwide. Houston Rockets Yao Ming scored only 12 points and looked lost on defensive and Milwaukee Bucks Yi Jianlian put up only 6 points as the Rockets beat the Bucks 91-83.

“Both of us struggled a little bit, but we got the win,” Yao downplayed why he didn’t play so well but understood the significance of the game. “It is big, to be honest, I was a little bit nervous last night. … It’s like a playoff game or something.” Yi was a bit more reserved saying “As far as we’re concerned, in the grand scope of things, it’s another regular-season game.”

Yao did grab 12 rebounds for the Rockets but got into early foul trouble which limited his aggressiveness under the boards. The Rockets were led by Tracy McGrady who scored a game high 33 points and Rafer Alston who scored 10 points and had 9 assists.

The Bucks were led by Andrew Bogut who scored 21 points and Charlie Villanueva who came off the bench to score 14 points.

Both Yao and Yi had off nights from their season averages - Yao is averaging 22.1 points per game and 11 assists per game - Yi is averaging 9.6 points per game and 5.8 assists per game.
