Let’s look at the current MLB standings:

In the ultra-competitive American League East the Baltimore Orioles are currently 6-1 and have the best record in MLB. Great for the Orioles but does anyone really think they will keep this up? Not even keep it up but stay within the playoff chase with the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees in the division? The Red Sox and Yankees are both sitting at 4-5, odds are at least one of the two teams will start playing up to their potential. The Orioles should be happy with a 3^rd or 4^th place finish and not get their hopes up for anything more.

In the American League West all 4 teams are within a game or two of each other, I actually see this division being a tight race for most of the season until the Los Angeles Angles run away with it towards the end of the season. What about the Mariners and Rangers? The Rangers are not as bad as everyone thinks but still not good enough and the Mariners are not as good as everyone thinks. 

Things get interesting in the American League Central. The Kansas City Royals are 6-2 and the Detroit Tigers are 1-7. Seems like the opposite of what it should be right? Well the Tigers are not looking good, I thought they would be better heading into Spring Training but I have not seen any progression of their top free agents and core players. The Kansas City Royals are a team that could be the surprise MLB team of 2008. There is a lot of talent in this division; it might come down to who can stay the healthiest.

The National League is a lot less dramatic – the Nationals and Giants suck, as well they should. The Cardinals are playing good baseball right now and will run away with the Central division (sorry Cub fans). The National League east will be the most interesting; none of the teams are showing me anything that makes me think one will separate from the pack. Oh even though I said that it is to early in the season to make predictions – but I got one Pedro Martinez will fight the injury big all year long.

“The spirited rivalry between the QMJHL’s Quebec Remparts and Chicoutimi Sagueneens reached a new low on Saturday, and once again, a Roy was front and centre. This time, however, it wasn’t Quebec head coach Patrick Roy, but his son Jonathan who plays goal for the Remparts.” “With the Remparts trailing 7-1 near the end of the second period of their playoff game on Saturday, players on both sides began to brawl. The younger Roy skated towards Chicoutimi netminder Bobby Nadeau, but was held back by two on-ice officials.” “According to reports, it was at that point that father Patrick told his son to go after Nadeau. Jonathan Roy skated towards the opposing netminder and landed a series of punches without any retaliation, then saluted the opposing fans before starting another fight with defenceman Sebastien Rioux. ”

Great, interesting right? We all love a good Hockey fight right, especially when goalies go at it. However watch the video and you will see that the other goalie wants NOTHING to do with Roy or fighting in general. But does that stop Roy from taking him down and getting a few cheap shots in? Of course not.

What a goon. Oh and what is with the names of these teams? Quebec Remparts? Chicoutimi Sagueneens? What is a Saqueneens? yeah they are in Quebec which speaks French but still, I mean cant they use names like Polar Bears or Snow cats?

In the 3rd quarter of today’s game the reigning NBA MVP took a nasty tumble and hobbled off the court. “I fell awkwardly and my left leg got caught underneath of me,” Nowitzki said in a statement after the game. “I am going to get re-evaluated in the morning and I hope to have more information then.” Even though the official word has yet to be given it appears as though Nowitzki will miss at least 2 weeks.

This would usually be bad news for any team when their star player goes down, but this is even worse news for the Mavericks who are fighting to keep their playoff spot - which currently stands at 7th in the Western Conference. The Mavericks are usually a playoff shoe-in but not this year as they could easily drop out of playoff contention with some losses. The Golden State Warriors (who are in 8th place) are only 1 game behind the Mavericks and the Denver Nuggets (who are in 9th place and currently out of the playoffs) are only 2 games behind.

Oh, and one other interesting note about the Mavericks. Since that blockbuster trade to bring in Jason Kidd, the Mavericks have yet to beat a team with a winning record. That is not a good sign of things to come, especially with Dirk out.

The Spurs on the other hand have seen their fortune reverse after going on a 1-6 run. This win over the Mavericks not only  put some distance between the two teams but also might give the Spurs a kick in the butt they needed to make a run.
